Given the fact that all weapons in the fight against the causes of back pain rarely lead to a final victory and keeping in mind that back pain in most cases is a periodic problem, we have to admit that drugs in the widest sense of the word usually work best.

Not all medications against back pain work for all victims though. So the golden rule should be: if you don’t feel it is doing good, than it is not doing good.

There are several types of drugs that you might consider. All of them usually help and none of them will require a prescription.

The classical household remedies for external application hardly ever disappoint. There are countless brands of tiger balm available everywhere. If you do not trust the content of such imported products, you may go for a pure substance like essential peppermint oil. Generally spoken the hotter it feels, the better. There are however people with very sensitive skin that are limited in their choices of what and how much they can apply.

For internal use recently an herbal remedy from South East Asia has gained reputation. Mitragyna speciosa, commonly called Kratom, is a leaf from a jungle tree with very strong painkilling and stimulating properties. It is not yet FDA approved, but widely distributed over the Internet.

The most widely used remedies against back pain however still are so called NSAID’s - non steroid anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen.
